30 colossal John Lassater quotes that will make you laugh and think

Did you enjoy Toy story and the other Pixar movies together with your kids and friends or by yourself? The person behind all of this running the show is John Lasseter he feels like he doesn’t work at all as the CEO and Steve Job’s named him the heart and soul of Pixar

  1. People who get into animation tend to be kids. We don't have to grow up. But also, animators are great observers, and there's this childlike wonder and interest in the world, the observation of little things that happen in life.
  2. I think 'Disney Infinity' is exciting. It's hard to even call it a video game, because it's so different. What excites me about this is how it's going to put more and more of what happens in the game into the hands of the user; it's up to them. You can play it to where everything's laid out for you.
  3. Computers don't create computer animation any more than a pencil creates pencil animation. What creates computer animation is the artist.
  4. You can achieve all the things you want to do, but it's much better to do it with loved ones around you; family and friends, people that you care about that can help you on the way and can celebrate you, and you can enjoy the journey.
  5. We make the kind of movies we like to watch. I love to laugh. I love to be amazed by how beautiful it is. But I also love to be moved to tears. There's lots of heart in our films.
  6. My father pulled into Pearl Harbor four days after the bombing, and he said, everything was still burning. He said they never told the public how bad it was. It was really bad.
  7. Every young person gets so excited about new software packages and new technology.
  8. 'Cars' is simply near and dear to my heart.
  9. When you're a director, you really live whatever you do.
  10. The art challenges the technology, and the technology inspires the art.
  11. Animation is the only thing I ever wanted to do in my whole life. I have no desire for live-action or anything else.
  12. I loved animation and cartoons, even when it was not cool when you were in high school. I raced home to see the Bugs Bunny cartoons.
  13. When you take something that's inert, and through motion, give it life, make it appear to be alive, living, breathing thinking and having emotions, that's animation. But when you take something that's live-action, and move a part of it, that's a special effect.
  14. People want to be creatively satisfied, and having fun is such an important part of that.
  15. There was a period of time when they estimated the two biggest stars in Hollywood were Charlie Chaplin and Mickey Mouse.
  16. 'Cars' was about Lightning McQueen learning to slow down and to enjoy life. The journey is the reward.
  17. Short films really helped me develop as a story teller, animator, and as a director.
  18. I believe in research. Each movie at Pixar involves research with college professors or taking trips to learn as much as we can about a particular subject matter.
  19. I have motor oil running through my veins.
  20. Every Pixar movie at one time was the worst motion picture ever made.
  21. I've noticed with my own kids, it seems like they have so much more homework than I did.
  22. What I love about Goofy is the flesh on his cheeks. You can almost feel it.
  23. In computer animation, every detail has to be thought out, designed, modelled, shaded, placed and lit. The more you add, the more computer memory you need.
  24. Pixar's short films convinced Disney that if the company could produce memorable characters within five minutes, then the confidence was there in creating a feature film with those abilities in story and character development.
  25. Pixar has invented much of computer animation as it's known today, and I've been very lucky to be the first traditional animator to work with computer animation.
  26. The way the films look will never entertain an audience alone. It has to be in the service of a good story with great characters.
  27. Sunday, for me, is all about being home with the family with no plans.
  28. I realised that people make cartoons for a living. It had never dawned on me that you could do this as a career.
  29. Soon I learned that the worse the puns and jokes, the funnier they could be if you knew how to deliver them.
  30. Art challenges technology, but technology inspires the art.

Conclusion

The points John makes about creativity and tools are something I think about from time to time. I sold all kinds of online tools and hardware in the IT world. Some people do amazing things with them and others don’t. There are movies out there which splash millions on special effects which still looks shoddy and companies which spent thousands on software which is filled with shoddy information. In the end, it is up to the creator, the person who is using the tools to create something great, not to the tools you use. Same applies to running faster, lifting stronger and thinking deeper. It I more about the passion and work you do rather than the gadgets you use to track your progress. They help, but they do not create discipline and commitment. That is on you. If you want to get better you came to the right place and let me in the comments to further the discussion.
