You will do most 5x5 programs three times a week. Anything below that usually disrupts the structure of the program. Same goes for more sessions a week unless your 5x5 schedule has dedicated days for accessory work.

I personally would recommend to beginners to run a 5x5 program for a year to 1.5 years. If you just want to get active and than switch to do at least 4 weeks. To see the first remarkable results stick at least 12 weeks to 5x5.

To compare Stronglifts and PPL is apples and oranges. While Stronglifts is a program PPL is a training method. If you find a Push, pull, legs program to do be aware that they often are biased towards bodybuilding rather than functional fitness.
