Dumbbells can replace barbells in most fitness scenarios and not for competitive powerlifting and weightlifting scenarios.

Stronglifts can be done with dumbbells except for the back squat. Therefore I prefer adjustable kettlebells for doing Stronglifts at home as you can replicate all movements.
