What is your why

Before we go into the details of whether powerlifting will make you fat, let me ask you a couple of questions:

  • Why are you concerned about being fat
  • Why do you want to powerlift
  • What happens when you do
  • What happens if you don’t

These questions are important to get to where you want to be. Research shows that people who reflect on and write down their goals are more likely to achieve them. So sit down and think before you act. Be as detailed as you possibly can. Many people go about their lives like this:

  • What do I want
  • How do I get it
  • Why do I want it

Almost everyone knows what they want. Fewer make a detailed plan on how to achieve it. Almost no one writes down why they want something. If you make what you want the center of your life you will create a consumer mind. What you want changes hundreds of times a day. Therefore you will be running in hundreds of directions at the same time and arrive nowhere. Your resources will be spread thin and there will Berber be enough time to get anything done. Something interesting happens when you flip the order of these questions on their head:

  • Why do you want something
  • How do you get it
  • What needs to be done

This puts the most important items in the middle of your life. Your thoughts and actions will become more connected and success more likely. If you want to know how this works on a psychological level read Daniel Kahneman's thinking fast and slow. Simon Sinek's TED talk on the golden circle will change your life.

Powerlifting

The goal of powerlifting is to establish the highest possible total. Your total is built from three lifts. These are the bench press, squat, and deadlift. For each lift, you have three attempts to put the biggest number possible on the board. For each lift, your best attempt will be summed up into your total.

Physics dictates that the bigger you are the easier it becomes to lift big weights. Powerlifters, therefore, try to be as heavy as they can as their weight class allows. Many go on a big diet before a competition to lose 5 to 10kg. Powerlifting will create big physics which are strong. You want to pack as much power into as little space as possible.

What makes you fat

You gain weight when you go into a caloric surplus. This means that you put more energy into your body than your burn. This is mostly achieved by eating a lot.

If you eat a lot and combine it with being inactive your body will turn your extra calories into fat. Fat is the long term energy storage of your body. It is easier for your body to build fat than muscle. Without activity, your body will build fat instead of muscle out of the surplus energy.

Will powerlifting make you fat

No, your body will when you overeat and stay inactive. Gaining fat is a function of eating too much without being active. Powerlifting itself will not make you fat. Eating a lot and powerlifting most likely will build muscle but not turn you into a bodybuilder.
