Most popular rogue bars in 2020

This is an overview of the most popular barbells on Marathon-CrossFit.com during 2020. The ranking is as followed:

That the operator bar was so popular on Marathon-CrossFit in 2020 came as a surprise to me. It is one of the cheaper Rogue barbells which still has a cool name rather than being a variation of the Rogue Ohio barbell. If you want to feel a little more camouflaged in your life, go with this one. You can read the full review of the operator bar via this link.

The West side bar is a variation of the Ohio bar specifically for powerlifting. It is very similar to the Rogue Ohio power bar which recently has gotten a little more attention from influencers. This is a solid bar if you do not intend to do the Olympic lifts and stick to the bench press, deadlift, and barbell back squat in your training. You can read the full review of the west side bar via this link.

The Rogue Russian bar is another surprise on the Marathon-CrossFit popularity list. While it is one of the most expensive bars you can get from Rogue I personally find that it is more of a collector's item with nostalgia attached to it. It is a great piece of craftsmanship to recreate a bar from the Soviet era. Unfortunately, the collar system is not used in competition anymore and also tenders the bar useless once you lose one of the collars. Rogue also does not provide an option to buy the custom collars separately in case you do lose them. Based on this I would take the Pyrros bar over the Russian bar any given day for this budget. The Rogue Multi-grip bar is a great additional tool to bring your bench press training to the next level. Especially if you are a big fan of the Westside training method as it asks for many grip variations. This bar might not be your first purchase, but fun addition to your gym once all the essentials are covered. You can read the full review of the Rogue Multi-grip bar by following this link.

The Chan bar is my personal favorite if you want to do it all with your barbell. It is reasonably priced, has a cool design, and can be used for Olympic lifts and the big three alike. If you are a CrossFit fan who wants to workout from home, this is a great pick. You can read the full review of the Rogue Chan bar by following this link.

What is your why

Before we go into the details of which barbell to use from Rogue, let me ask you a couple of questions:

  • Why do you want to use a barbell
  • Why do you want to get stronger
  • Why do you want to build muscle
  • What happens when you do
  • What happens if you don’t

These questions matter for your long term commitment and success. Life will get in the way of your goals, ambitions, and dreams. You have to ready and motivated to overcome lack of motivation, bad luck, and stress to reach your goals. Many people fail with their diets and exercise regimes because of lack of commitment and perspective. When you sit down and reflect deeply on these questions this will become a lot less likely to happen. Most people go through their lives like this:

  • What do I want
  • How do I get it
  • Why do I want it

If you make what you want the center of attention you will go in a million directions and arrive nowhere. What you want changes hundreds of times a day based on whom you see, what you do and where you are. This is not a great beacon of hope to follow. If you flip the running order of these questions on their head something interesting happens:

  • Why do you want something
  • How do you get it
  • What needs to be done

This will put your innermost desires at the center of all your actions and desires. It will reduce clutter and set you up to walk in the direction that makes you feel more fulfilled of you want to know how this works on a psychological basis read Daniel Kahneman's thinking fast and slow. Simon Sinek's TED talk on the golden circle will change your life.

What else to consider from Rogue

What is your training style

To choose the right barbell it helps to think about what kind of training style you prefer. Usually, there are three big different styles of lifting:

  • Weightlifting
  • Powerlifting
  • CrossFit style of lifting

Weightlifters mainly use barbells for overhead lifts like the clean and jerk. The bar will be dropped from overhead many times with considerable weight. For this, you want a bar with a good whip and spin. The knurling might not be as aggressive as with powerlifting bars. Same goes for tensile strength.

For powerlifting you want a bar with very aggressive knurling, less whip and spin is also not as important. For the bench press and squat, the bar can be stiffer. For the deadlift, some good whip can help to make it easier to get the bar off the ground.

For CrossFit scenarios, you want an all-round barbell which is not ok expensive. You will most likely use it outside and hand it off other equipment as the movements have to be done for time. The weight you use is usually a lot less compared to powerlifting and weightlifting. Also, a less aggressive knurling might be of advantage as your hands often take a serious beating during a WOD.

What is your training experience

The more experienced you are the better the bar you will use. When you are learning the movements you might want to use a bar that you are not sad about if it breaks. You might drop it, scratch it and do all kinds of weird stuff with it.

The. Keep experienced you become the more you will appreciate a good barbell and it’s qualities. It might even take you years to get your first one as a barbell also requires a gym to be put into. This is usually the bigger investment.
